"Despite his profession, Eric loves music" – Isaac Stern, violinist
Writer, filmmaker, journalist, Éric Lipmann was born in Besançon on May 30, 1938. A survivor of the Vichy militia, he studied in the United States, then pursued law and philosophy in Paris. Early on, he discovered a passion for music and record collecting, which he gradually transformed into a multimedia opus—at the crossroads of musicology, listening pleasure, popular culture, and technology.
He is the author of several books (Concerto pour transistors, L’Amérique de George Gershwin, Monsieur Barclay, Paderewski, Les Compositeurs). He also directed musical documentaries such as I Love Quincy (on Quincy Jones) and Que la fête continue (on French chanson), and produced many TV on TF1 during the 1980s.
In 1947, at just nine years old and without realizing it, Lipmann founded the “Record Museum”—a one-of-a-kind collection devoted to recorded music.
DJ at Europe No. 1 in 1956, creative director at Publicis by 1960 (and head of the agency by 1968), he later led TF1’s music services until 1986. He served as a special advisor to the CEOs of L’Oréal, Havas Conseil, Gaumont, Hermès, and the Arnault Group, and lectured at Paris-Dauphine University from 2001 to 2008. His radio show Concerto pour transistors (1972–1985) on Europe 1 remains a unique case of musical evangelism on a major national station.

Eric never gave up on his dream of instant music programming—where emotion would prevail over knowledge, allowing everyone to encounter the highest forms of music, guided solely by the joy of listening.
Since 2025, that dream has become a reality. Its name is Melodibank.
The fruit of more than sixty years of meticulous passion, Melodibank offers the chance to discover and enjoy thousands of musical works, each indexed primarily according to the emotions they convey.
Every title has been digitized by ear and integrated into a bilingual, encyclopedic database of over 200,000 pages, covering every genre and era—from Gregorian chant to contemporary music from all 206 countries of the world.
Melodibank is conceived as an urgent and necessary response to the dehumanization of music by algorithmic production and unscrupulous platforms. A response by listening to the great creators of music fight back through emotional pleasure against the erasure of the global musical heritage.
Now aged 87, Éric Lipmann seeks partners and/or successors willing to carry forward the legacy of this unique creation—a singular presence in the global cultural landscape, where emotion and artificial intelligence meet.
An original musical application, Melodibank is a tool for preserving the world’s cultures—through the universal language of music.
